While the big brands still take most of the off sales in Ireland there is an ever increasing selection of fringe and specialist beers available on the shelves. Some are distributed independently while the big breweries also run their own lines. As part of their International Beer selection Heineken Ireland (based in Cork) are distributing Affligem Blond Ale.
Affligem is a Belgian ale brewed my monks, at least it was once brewed by them, I believe for the last 30 years or so the only thing they have to do with the product is cash the licensing cheque into their monk bank account thus freeing up their time for more silence vows, praying or football. It’s a stong ale both in taste and in alcohol weighing in at 6.8% proof. It’s a cloudy to pour with a very malty taste along with some sweetness. Certainly not a party beer where you chug them down all night, more of a beer for sipping in front of the fire in place of a glass of wine. Refreshing change from the norm but no more than two in a sitting for me.
